It has emerged tonight that Combined Counties Football League Referee Daniel Sweeney has been viciously assaulted in an alleged barbaric attack after refereeing a CCFL Division 1 game between Horseleap and Mullingar Town.
Sources close to Stoppagetime.ie have said that three people have been arrested in connection with the assault.
It is understood that three Mullingar players and a spectator attacked Mr Sweeney in the car park after the game. Mr Sweeney received numerous injuries to his jaw, nose and cheekbone.
Combined Counties Football League Chairman Sean Montgomery spoke to the Independent earlier and said that all involved would receive Lifetime Bans. ” There will be no stone left unturned in terms with how to deal with this. It is completely and utterly unacceptable”.
Paul Malone of the Midlands Referee Branch said “Its an absolute disgrace and it needs to be clamped down on, it is getting worse” and he went on to call for jail time for the perpetrators.
