Ireland started their defence of the UEFA Regions Cup with a win over South Russia in Group B. Newmarket Celtic’s Eoin Hayes grabbed the all important winner mid-way through the first half and his team held out well against a tough Russian side.
2008/09 winners Castilla y Leon (ESP) ran out comfortable winners against Olomouc (CZE) in the other Group B fixture. Roberto Garcia Puente put the Spaniards two goals to the good i the first half but the Czech’s halved the deficit before the hour mark thanks to P.Navratil. Castilla woud not let this discourage them and further goals from Rodriguez Ramos and Jorge Vegas seen their side to a comfortable 4-1 win.
Group A sees hosts Istanbul top of the table as they ran out three nil winners against Ingulec (UKR). Serkan Uysal 34′, Ufuk Ozcan 52′ and Semih Akgoz 90′ (P) were on target.
Zagreb (CRO) and Lisboa (POR) had to settle for a point in a pulsating two all drawin the other Group A game. Stulec put the Croatians ahead mid-way through the first half but David Cardoso equalised ten minutes later. Zagreb however would not be deterred and regained their lead before half time thanks to Adzic and it took a Tiago Honrado goal just before the hour mark to level proceedings.
