The FAI Junior Challenge Cup is due to kick off in some parts around the country and stoppagetime.ie has pinpointed our favourites for this seasons competition.
Three times champions Sheriff YC start of this year’s tournament as favourites having been the most consistent of Junior football teams in the country in recent times if not of all time. The Dubliners won last seasons title after beating Pike Rovers , having lost to Liffey Wanderers the season beforehand.
Pike Rovers themselves are at last picking up the form it takes to win such a competition as the moved top of the Limerick District League this week following a hard fought win over Aisling Annacotty.
St Michael’s of The TSDL have been a team watch year in and year out and anytime they are eliminated it is met with shock. Having both Clonmel Celtic & Town in their League has given all three Tipp South teams a boost in recent years as both Clonmel sides continue to push for every major Honour on offer.
Nenagh Afc are holding their own in the Limerick District League this season and with a young squad and a terrific underage set up it would seem that it will only be a matter of time before they make the jump to the top. Janesboro and Fairview Rangers will also be looking to make a big impact this season as both certainly have the ability to go the distance.
Carrick Utd and Hibernians of the Waterford & District Premier league have flown out of the traps and will hope to go into this with the form required.
Newmarket Celtic of Clare have once again been in great form since their opening day loss to Bridge Celtic, a loss that seems to have woken the beast. Shannon Town also have been setting an early pace as it seems every top team in most leagues now have serious opposition.
Nenagh Celtic of the NT&DL have struggled with injury since the start of the season and their loss seems to have woken up the rest of the division with the newly United Roscrea Town Football Club leading the charge and Thurles Town maintaining a 100% record in the league and having already beating Celtic in the Premier Division Shield Final at the end of August.
Abbeyfeale Utd of the Limerick Desmond League have been off colour since the season started and that has opened the door for Rathkeale AFC to charge clear, having amassed 9 points in their first three games.
Stoppagetime.ie were looking at the odds on Paddy Power and if we were to put our money on these are the picks we would go for……
Sheriff YC 4/1
Obviously cannot look past these lads as they won everything available to them last season.
Pike Rovers, St Michael’s 9/1
Both these sides are more than capable to win this cup with the former looking to go one further this time round.
Clonmel Celtic 20/1
This side has huffed and puffed in recent years and will hope to get their form together very soon.
Nenagh Afc, St Peters Athlone, Newmarket Celtic 25/1
These three on their day have all the qualities to beat anyone and if they can bring that into this tournament they could very well be strong underdogs coming into the latter end of this competition.
Without a doubt the top competition in the country and we look forward to watching it every step of the way.
