Saints got off to the perfect start and found themselves a goal to the good after just six minutes as a free kick was poorly cleared by the Celtic defence and the ball fell kindly to David Slattery, his left foot effort nestled into the bottom corner from the edge of the area much to the joy of the big home crowd. Celtic looked to fight back immediately and efforts from David Reidy, Eoin Hayes and David McCarthy all went abegging over the next ten minutes.

Celtic were made to rue those missed chances mid-way through the half as a corner from Shane Ryan found the head of Paul Breen and he made no mistake in doubling his sides lead. Saints had the ball in the net twice more in the next ten minutes, but Jimmy Carr and John Connery’s efforts were ruled out for offside as the hosts looked to kill the game off.

Celtic almost halved the deficit on the stroke of half time as Eoin Hayes ran through on goal, his effort however missed the target despite having Aidan Walsh beaten in the Saints goal.

The second half seen Celtic push forward looking to get back into the game but again efforts from Hayes, Cullinan and Reidy weren’t good enough to beat Walsh before the hour mark. Celtic were offered a chance to half the deficit in the final few minutes when they were awarded a penalty, but Eoin Hayes again seen his effort sail over the bar, compounding a miserable day for the normally devastating striker.
