Ryan To The “Four” As Gurta Beat Borris

NT&DL Division 1

Gurtagarry Fc 4 – 1 Borrisokane Fc

Gurtagarry got over last week’s defeat by giving Borrisokane a heavy defeat in Latteragh yesterday morning. After dropping 2 points in Ballyhaden earlier in the season Gurta emphatically claimed all 3 this time.

Gurta welcomed back Paul Ryan from a 7 match absence, coincidentally his last appearance was at Borrisokane where he scored in a 1-1 draw, and Ryan created havoc across the Borrisokane back line throughout the 90 minutes.

It took Gurta half an hour to break the deadlock, and a brilliantly worked goal it was. Ronan Kinane patiently waited to play a crossfield ball Conor Looby on the right wing and the wide man floated a terrific cross towards Paul Ryan who leaped high above the Borrisokane centre half and headed into the roof of the net.

Gurta should have been out of sight at the break but thanks to 3 superb saves by the visiting keeper the advantage was only one at half-time.

In the second half Gurta upped their game and Borrisokane had no answer. Looby again was pivotal, bamboozling his marker with an obscene dummy, before playing a sliderule pass in to Ryan who slotted past the keeper with ease.

Completely against the run of play Borrisokane were back in the game when a clearance from the half way line evaded Hayes in the Gurta goal to make the scoreline 2-1 with half an hour remaining.

Jake Ryan was brought on and immediately he left the full-back for dead before squaring for his elder brother Paul to claim his hatrick and make it 3-1.

The game turned sour then as a man from each side was sent off following a melee on the Borrisokane touchline. Soon afterwards Paul scored his 4th goal with a simple finish rounding the Borrisokane cat who was now utterly fed up to the point that he drew a wild kick at the Gurta talisman and was very lucky not to see red (the ref could only issue a yellow or he would have to disallow the goal).

Paul almost had a 5th but put a fairly simple chance over the bar much to the amusement of the Borrisokane keeper.

Gurta seem to have steadied the ship now in our first season in Division 1 and have won 3 and drawn 1 of our last 5 matches.

Best on the day was Paul Ryan but Conor Looby and the Gurta defence as a whole were also superb.
