Portumna Town 2-2 Killavilla Utd

Nothing to separate these teams again as the encounter throws up another 2-2 draw in the League. Pressure on Portumna as Kevin Brummell had to bow out after the warm up with a knee problem, Portumna were hoping for an injury free day.

The teams used the pitch well through out the game with both drawing saves from the respective keepers. Portumna got the rub of the green first on 7 minutes when a Ciaran Haugh shot from over 25 yds out got a slight deflection off John Cordial’s back to leave Jason Ryan in the Villa goal wrong footed for Portumnas first. Again on 10 minutes Ronan O’Meara’s shot through a tight defence went just wide of the right post. Portumna were having a strong opening quarter when David Ward made space for himself down the right with a lovely cross which was met by Sean O’Meara’s head, but went wide of the left post. Niall Duffy also had a chance in the box with a header from a ball in from the right but the contact wasn’t sweet enough and his header went wide. Villa then got their rub of the green on 24 mins, when a weak back pass to Josh Gaynor in the Portumna goals was picked up by Coley Cleary and he made no mistake in finishing into the open goal for Villas first.
Villa still pressed hard and tested the Portumna keeper a couple of times but he responded well as did the Portumna defence. Ronan O’Meara and Sean O’Meara worked tirelessly in midfield for Portumna with Ronan taking a low hard shot from left of the 18 yard box to bring out the best in Jason Ryan in the Villa net.
Second half saw Villa making two changes with John Pio Fitzpatrick coming on for Paul Lake who was on a yellow, the game continued with the same tempo with both teams pressing for a goal and conscious that one slip could give the opposition the game. The deadlock was broken on 74 minutes with a ball in from outside the box on the right by Ciaran Haugh which was won by Portumna in the box and Ger Ward who had just came on for Niall Duffy injured, found the net for Portumna’s second.
Villa used more subs to step up the tempo and in their eagerness for the equaliser were called off side a couple of times. They did get the equaliser on 82nd minute when Pio delivered a ball to the edge of the box where Craig Phelan advanced and chipped the advancing keeper for the equaliser. A couple of minutes later Josh Gayner was injured keeping another Villa advance on goal at bay and was replaced by John O’Meara in the goals. Portumna dealt with Villas attempts to get a winner and the game ended as before 2-2.
