Pole Position for Portumna

Portumna Town 5

Clodiagh Rangers 2

Portumna went two points clear on top of the NT&DL Division 1 after comprehensively beating promotion rivals Clodiagh Rangers.

Town went ahead after seven minutes when a misplaced back pass from a Clodiagh defender ended up in the net. Things went from bad to worse for Rangers when Ciaran Haugh send Darragh Barry through on goal and he easily slid the ball past Adrian Cooke in the goal.

Clodiagh halved the deficit on the fifteen minute mark when they were awarded a penalty, Paul Ryan stepped up and drilled the ball into the corner despite John O’Meara getting a hand on it. Town regained their two goal lead a minute before half time when Barry sent Gary Hogan down the left and his cross looped in over the unfortunate Cooke in the Rangers goal.

Rangers would go away though and again brought themselves back into the game on fifty six minutes when Paul Ryan rifled a free kick past O’Meara. Portumna effectively ended the game as a contest on sixty three minutes when Ronan O’Meara delivered a well measured ball from the middle and Rae McEntee latched onto it and finished the move brilliantly.

Town weren’t finished there though when Ciaran Haugh sent Ronan O’Meara through and he beat Cooke to the ball and he looped the ball into the net to finish off the scoring. A 5-2 victory that has moved Town eight points clear of third place and the loss leaves Rangers nine points off the promotion places.
