Nenagh Celtic were dumped put of the FAI Junior Cup today courtesy of TSDL Premier Division outfit Peake Villa.
Celtic started the brighter and had the better of the first 25 minutes, shots from Jimmy Hynes, Benny Sheahan, Stephen Flynn and Mark Walsh weren’t enough to beat Ryan in the Villa goal. Celtics would be made to pay for not capitalising on their chances when a long throw found its way to Pippy Carroll who leapt the highest and brilliantly nodded the ball into the corner to give the keeper no chance on the 27th minute.
Celtic nearly equalised straight away when a Danny Ryan free kick was wonderfully floated in but the resulting header from Mark Walsh missed the target when he should have done better. Again Celtic would be made to rue their wastefulness when a Niddy Ryan mistake handed Adam Garrett the chance to score and he did so with aplomb into the roof of the net to send the Tipp South side two goals to the good.
Celtic would reply immediately though when a pass into Jamie Kelly looked to be safe but his wonderful overhead kick went over both keeper and defender into the corner from twenty yards to bring his side right back into it on the 31st minute.
Only two minutes later Celtic thought they were level when a Paul 8cross found Danny Ryan only for his goal bound effort defected wide by the narrowest of margins. The chances kept coming for Celtic and in injury time when another free from D.Ryan found Jimmy Hynes this time only for Ryan to save again. The resulting Sean Healy corner found the head of D.Ryan who’s header was again saved on the line by the gallant Villa defence.
The second half was a much scrappier affair and Celtic kept to their long ball game. Seven minutes into the half another dangerous free from D.Ryan found Paul Walsh and his header found Mark Walsh who’s shot was again saved by Ryan who parried the ball to Hynes who must score but his shot was gallantly blocked by the defenders once more.
With neither side managing to take control it would be Celtic again to go close when another Healy corner found Paul Walsh’s head to square it to D.Ryan and his shot on the turn missed the target by just inches. Villa would then break forward soon after with a brilliant run from Carroll who in turn squared the ball to the in form Matthew McKevitt and his dink over the keeper went wide of the mark when he probably should have scored.
Villa managed the last twenty minutes well as Celtic offered many a long ball in the favourable conditions and the TSDL side would be the team to make the 4th round draw.
In a match full of mistakes and poor finishing both sides gave it their all with Danny Ryan, Jimmy Hynes and Paul Walsh being Celtics top players, Pippy Carroll, Maris Baltins and Stephen Ryan were the best for the visitors with the latter making a string of saves to ensure his sides progress into the next round and hence the Stoppagetime.ie Man of the Match.
