The NT&DL’S sole survivors in the FAI Junior Cup, Thurles Town, have qualified for the open round after a hard fought win over TSDL Premier Division outfit Tipperary Town.
Tipp controlled the game for the first ten minutes and really should have went ahead when two very good chances went abegging just minutes apart. Thurles weathered that storm and Tipp were made to pay when captain Barry Ryan scored with a smart volley to put the hosts a goal to the good.
Thurles doubled their lead eight minutes later when Paul Kirwan was fouled i the box and Ryan again stepped up to score the resulting penalty. Vinnie Godfrey did half the arrears for Tipp on the half hour mark when a smart move through the centre seen him bearing down on Loughman in the goal and he made no mistake scoring into the bottom left.
With the game on tenderhooks Thurles regained their two goal advantage through a fantastic header from Micheal Foley just before half time.
The second halfwas a much tamer affair and neither side could score and little chances to be had.
Thurles will now face an away trip to Middleton in the fifth round
