BT Harps welcomed NT&DL newcomers Roscrea Town to Priory Place on Sunday last and came away with an impressive 4-1 win.
BT got the first big chance on 8mins when a cross in from the left by Steven Quinlan seen Ray Mc Nicholas miscue a header and Eanna Jones volleyed wide to the disappointment of the home crowd. The half was ebbing and flowing when on 16 mins Roscrea got their first real chance after very good play from Shane Moloney who teed up John Pio Fitzpatrick and his low drive was well saved by Kuba Beban in the goal. Roscrea were dealt a major blow a minute later when they lost Fergal Flanagan to injury and he was replaced by Niall O’Lone. On 23mins the match was in doubt after referee John McGrath was caught up in a tackle and he had to be taken off to recieve treatment, ten minutes later he returned to the fold much to the delight of both teams. On 26 mins Pio repaid Moloney as he pass a low ball across the box only for Moloney to drag the ball wide. The game was coming into life when BT latched onto a loose ball on 29mins and Sean Guerin let fly from 20 yards only to be denied by the crossbar. Roscrea then became unlucky after the impressive Moloney made a great turn and laid it off to O’Lone who from 25 yards was also denied by the crossbar. Then in injury time BT broke the deadlock when a long ball over the top by Quinlan seen Jones head the ball around the onrushing Stephen Byrne and he calmly rolled the ball past Mc Nicholas on the line.
The second half started very poorly for the away side when Johnny Coleman turned Cordial in the box and buried the ball in the corner to make it 2-0 to the Harps on 47mins. Roscrea fought to get back into the game and got their reward when a ball over the top seen a poor defensive header and Shane Moloney went through and lobbed the Keeper with ease to half the deficit. Only two minutes later Roscrea should have equalised when another mazy run by Moloney seen him roll the ball through to his namesake Eoin who blasted the ball over the bar when he really should have scored. Roscrea were gifted another chance on 78 mins when Eoin Moloney bursted down the left and whipped in a great cross only for Craig Phelan to head over with the goal at his mercy. BT ended the game as a contest in injury time when another long ball in seen Coleman head the ball onto Quinlan who went through to finish beautifully off the post to make it 3-1. Three became four on the full time whistle when Aidan Fogarty rolled the ball into an empty net after Dean McEnroe put him through.
A very exciting game all round and BT ran out deserved winners, Roscrea will no doubt learn from this and look to push forward in the coming weeks.
Best players on the day were Shane Moloney for Roscrea but BT had Quinlan, McEnro and www.stoppagetime.ie Man of the Match Johnny Coleman on top form throughout.
John McGrath 9/10
